There was a very interesting article in the Guardian yesterday about the whole slaughter approach to the foot and mouth disease. I had no idea that this policy was put in place before germ theory. It also suggests that the reason we don’t use the vaccine that was developed ages ago is because the Government at the time feared that it wouldn’t be able to afford it. Of course now MAFF is contemplating mass slaughter of wildlife in a misbegotten attempt to control a disease which has no long-term effect on the animals who get it. The whole thing is a farce of the highest order and I am so furious about it I can barely articulate. Has it occurred to no one in charge that the policies might just be out of date?
