| Statement | I am looking for a position that will allow me to expand on my experience and skills, as well as earning a sufficient amount to see me through the final stages of my research, with further prospects beyond that. Most suitable would be a part-time or associate position, although I am more than willing to consider a full-time position that would allow me to take consecutive days off on the rare occasion that it is necessary for intense lab work. My ideal position would be varied, focusing on environmental enforcement or remediation, or assisting industry in complying with environmental requirements. I enjoy fieldwork and work well on my own or as part of a team. Irregular hours and travelling are perfectly acceptable. |

| Education |
Higher Degree By Research (PhD)
Institute of Water and Environment, Cranfield University at Silsoe 1997 - present.
I am researching the treatment of agricultural wastewater, particularly dirty water in the form of dairy parlour washings, using the overland flow system. This research is conducted as part of a contract with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The investigations are geared towards understanding the "black box" of mass balance regarding nitrogen, phosphorous and carbon in the input and run-off from the overland flow system. This requires wide-ranging environmental knowledge regarding the issues of discharge and consent, agricultural practise, farming attitudes and public perception, as well as the technical laboratory skills and capacity for self-motivated fieldwork. I have been required to make regular presentations to MAFF representatives as well as the other teams participating in the project (IGER and Silsoe Institute of Research), and also to develop good relations with local farmers whose assistance has been invaluable.

MSc Environmental Diagnostics
Biotechnology Centre, Cranfield University 1995-96
The course covered all aspects of environmental sampling, chemical and biological analysis, impact assessment, contamination, biosensors, legislation, remediation techniques for land and water, industrial standards, quality systems and pollution management. It was run in close collaboration with industry, and I was placed in a consultancy position with Anglian Water with a remit to investigate and analyse the efficacy of virus kill by ultraviolet irradiation in final effluent, specifically at the Wells sewage treatment works in Norfolk. |
BSc (Hons) Marine Sciences - Physical and Chemical Oceanography
University of Southampton 1990-94
The course covered all aspects of modern oceanography including instrumentation, dynamics, legislation, analysis, ecology, geology, biogeochemistry, sedimentation, pollution, impact assessment, remote sensing, modelling, computing and navigation. Studied the circulation of the Mediterranean using IR remote sensing for thesis. |
Millfield School 1988-90

| Employment |
Independent Consultant
I have been consulting for companies, trusts and individuals with an environmental basis, both in preparing reports and tenders, and also in development of web sites.
|
Warden and Environmental Consultant
Employers: The Rollright Trust
June 1998-present
Dealing with day-to-day management of a Late Neolithic/early Bronze Age stone circle on the Oxfordshire/Warwickshire border. This involves interacting with the public to educate them about the site and to prevent inadvertent damage being caused to the site, as well as training volunteers, and attending conferences as either a representative or to give lectures. I am required to deal diplomatically with the public, as well as English Heritage, commerical photographers, New Age practitioners, journalists and TV crews. I have also been involved in developing the environmental conservation plan for the site. This is currently a voluntary position. |

Employers: Derwent Information Ltd
November 1995 - November 1998
I produced abstracts for a variety of different mechanical and process patents, including patents for medical devices and instruments, and waste water treatment apparatus. This was done to a rigid formula and extremely tight time scale. The work was carried out on a self-employed basis, requiring excellent comprehension of both technical terminology and standard English, and good organisation skills. |
Admin Assistant
Employers: Oxfordshire Army Cadet Force
Aug-Oct 1995
I had responsibility for a wide range of administrative tasks with particular reference to computerised records and data management. I dealt with a large range of people from police to journalists, both in person and on the telephone. I was also responsible for training my replacement in the use of a computer system with which I was myself initially unfamiliar. |
Archaeological Technician
Employers: Tempvs Reparatvm (West Deeping Project)
August 1994 - July 1995
I carried out and became familiar with a wide range of archaeological activities covering all facets of physical excavation and recording, including a period as Finds Supervisor and on-site database manager. I also worked as personal assistant to the on-site director, liasing with specialists and consultants, and helped develop and maintain the site database. |
