Another Cumbrian site this, near Penwith. Yes, that's still England. Long Meg and her Daughters is the 6th largest circle in Britain, it says in my copy of "The Modern Antiquarian". The outlier that is Long Meg is a sandstone rock some 12 feet tall. Legend says that if anyone shatters Long Meg it will run with blood. Long Meg herself was a mythical figure buried by the south side of Westminster Abbey. Aubrey Burl suggests that the menhir is of a different period from the ring and is unrelated
Little Meg Stone circle is about half a mile from Long Meg and her Daughters. A mound that was on a plan made in 1875 is no longer evident. A slab wih concentric ring markings sits at the foot of one of the circle stones. Little Meg came some 1000 years later than Long Meg and her Daughters.
There are lots of sites out there with photos and info about Long Meg and Little Meg. Have a look at Andy Burnham's alphabetical listing to find them.
I would also like to point out that I personally disagree with the actions taken by Mr Shepherd in the earliest report I have here. I find the use of crystals and other non-degradable items as offerings to be entirely inappropriate, particularly given the unlikelihood of the orignal builders having access to strip-mined quartz points and other such items. However, I am entirely grateful for his entry (particularly as he was one of the few to include a grid reference - thankyou!).
