The Hurlers

Situated on the South side of Bodmin Moor, at Minions, are the remains of three large stone circles. The Hurlers in folklore are supposedly men turned to stone for playing hurling on the Sabbath. I'm not sure whether that is hurling as in the cross between hockey and lacrosse that I love so much, or whether it is a throwing game. The most complete circle is the Northern circle, 110 feet in diameter with 16 of the original 28 stones. The stones are all shaped local granite, the tallest some 6 feet. The circle is yet another to have a reputation as being "uncountable".

Purpose: First visit
Disturbed soil: Yes
Comments: A pair of local young men were riding nearby on trail bikes and chasing the sheep. Everyone who was visiting sopped and turned towards them and stared. They seemed to be intending to ride through the circle, but after a short consultation together on a neaby hill decided against it and rode off.
